Top 10 excercises for muscle gains
By Daniel Gonzalez Admin
In the world of training, there are endless exercises, variations, new machines, and trends appearing every year. This often makes people train with the constant feeling that they are missing the “secret exercise” that will help them grow faster. The reality is much simpler: most of your muscle gains will come from a relatively small group of exercises performed correctly and progressively over time.
You don’t need twenty different movements per muscle or a new routine every week. If you choose the right foundational exercises and learn to master them, you can build almost your entire physique around them.
In this article, I’m sharing the 10 exercises that, based on personal experience and real results, contribute the majority of muscle development when applied with proper technique, intensity, and consistency. I’ve also included a video where I explain each one in a more personal and detailed way so you understand not only what to do, but why each exercise made the list.

Top 10 — Key Exercises
1. Incline Dumbbell Press (Tier S)
Why: Greater range of motion than the barbell version and forces each arm to work independently, preventing strength imbalances. Excellent for building an aesthetic chest.
Practical tip: Control the eccentric phase and focus on a strong contraction at the top. 6–12 reps depending on your goal.
2. Reverse French Press (Prison Push-Ups)
Why: Provides a deep stretch and strong tension on the long head of the triceps with great carryover to pressing strength.
Practical tip: Keep elbows close and control the descent to maintain tension. 8–15 reps.
3. Pull-Ups
Why: Recruit lats, biceps, and scapular stability. With proper technique, they can be even more effective than lat pulldowns.
Practical tip: Prioritize technique (scapular depression and retraction). Add weight only when bodyweight pull-ups become easy. 4–8 weighted / 6–12 bodyweight reps.
4. Low Pulley Cable Biceps Curl (Tier S for Biceps)
Why: Constant tension throughout the range of motion and an excellent pump from the first execution.
Practical tip: Avoid swinging, keep elbows fixed, and focus on mind–muscle connection. 8–15 reps.
5. Low Cable Lateral Raises
Why: Extremely effective for deltoid development; slight arm rotation allows emphasis on anterior or lateral delts.
Practical tip: Small rotation at the top and focus on the lateral head. 10–15 reps.
6. Snatch-Grip Barbell Front Raises
Why: A very complete shoulder and trap builder; eccentric control is key.
Practical tip: Use straps if grip becomes limiting and slow down the eccentric phase. 8–12 reps.
7. Hack Squat
Why: A powerful quad builder when performed through a full range of motion (ass to grass).
Practical tip: Use multiple rep ranges (6–20) and train close to failure on key sets.
8. Bodyweight Sissy Squat
Why: Strong isolated stimulus for quadriceps that perfectly complements heavy squat work.
Practical tip: Add 2–4 sets at the end of leg day for extra quad stimulation.
9. Seated Leg Curl
Why: One of the best exercises for hamstrings, offering excellent isolation and control.
Practical tip: Focus on contraction and controlled range of motion. 8–15 reps.
10. Good Mornings
Why: Targets the posterior chain and lower back — essentially two benefits in one movement.
Practical tip: Technique is mandatory. Keep a neutral spine and progress loads gradually. 6–12 reps.
Practical Final Tips
- Prioritize technique: Proper execution will produce more long-term gains than heavier weights with poor form.
- Vary rep ranges: Combining 6–8 reps (strength) with 8–15 reps (hypertrophy) and sets close to failure maximizes adaptation.
- Listen to fatigue: If an exercise causes unusual pain, reduce load or temporarily replace it.
- Add extra volume for lagging muscles: 2–3 additional sets at the end of a session are usually enough.
- Track progression: Write down weights and reps — consistent progression, even small, builds most of your results.
If you’d like, I can turn this list into an 8-week training program using only these 10 exercises (sets, reps, and progression included). Contact me and we’ll build it together. 💪
